Research
I would consider two things in the research stage: the purpose of the gamification and the teachers who would integrate the game with me. To this end, I would decide on the standards and objectives of the unit. Then, I would discuss gamification with the other English 1 CP teachers to see how they felt about including it in our shared curriculum.
Choose
Here, I would decide how to integrate the game. First, I would have to select a game that was agreed upon by the other teachers and that aligned to our standards. Next, I would decide how long to use the game and how to structure my class around it.
Integrate
This step is important, as my district is extremely serious about privacy. First, I would ensure the game I chose did not violate COPPA. If it collected student information, I would get an administrator to submit it to our district for approval. I would also have to make sure our Chromebooks could support the game, and I would speak to our ETS to make sure she could help us set up the game as needed.
Pilot
This step would be a testing phase for my game. I would add it to the syllabus, create a rubric, and introduce the concept in detail to my students. In order to introduce it, I would have to decide if it were going to be required, part of a choice assignment, or extra-curricular.
Reflect
In this stage, I would reflect on the pilot phase of the game. I would collect a lot of data in the form of quizzes, reflections, and observations. Then, I would meet with the other English 1 CP teachers to decide if the game would be used again, and how its implementation would change.
